AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi 'Wish You Were Here' Helmet

The is the AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi ‘Wish You Were Here’ Helmet, also known as the ‘Wish’ helmet, which has now been released in the Corsa range.

This is a very special Valentino Rossi helmet design and it was created as a tribute to his close friend, and fellow MotoGP racer, Marco Simoncelli who was killed during the Sepang MotoGP in 2011.

Rossi unveiled this helmet at the Misano round of the 2013 MotoGP season. Ever since MotoGP returned to Misano in 2008, Valentino Rossi has had a custom helmet design created to celebrate the fact that this is his home race….literally, as the town of Tavullia where he was born is only a few miles up the road from the circuit.

Bringing this helmet tribute to the Misano MotoGP also held a deeper significance – Simoncelli was also a local, he was born in Cattolica, a seaside town a few miles away from the circuit, and the Misano circuit was renamed the ‘Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli’ in 2011 as a tribute to him.

The helmet was design by Aldo Drudi and it features the album cover for Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish you Were Here’. The top of the helmet features the robot arms, and the rear of the helmet features the famous Pink Floyd photograph showing two suited men shaking hands, with one on fire. The sides of the helmet feature Rossi’ number ’46’ in yellow.

Aldo Drudi described the helmet: “this year’s idea is very simple: the album cover dominates the crown of the helmet. Two robotic hands unite the four elements in the background”.

Valentino Rossi Misano 2013

The ‘Wish You Were Here’ reference is a clear message from Rossi to his good friend Marco Simoncelli, and the lyrics in the song are also pertinent to men who make their living risking their lives going round the same tracks every year during the MotoGP season:

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here

Official description of the AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi ‘Wish’ helmet:
Valentino Rossi’s dedication is very closely linked to the musical meaning of the images on the helmet. Wish you were here is an album about the absence of man, sad and lost in what Gilmour and waters define as the “society of machines”. There is no doubt that the absence of Marco Simoncelli has been felt even more strongly at his “home track” which was in fact named after him a few months after his tragic death.

This limited edition reproduces the graphics On Valentino’s race helmet except for the text “wish you were here” and visor components / accessories. The M of the monster energy logo is shown with his stylised flames on the chin guard and sides of the helmet.

The Corsa model combines the performance of the Pista GP with the characteristics needed for use on the road.

The Corsa has a carbon-fibre/glass-fibre/aramid fibre ssl (super super Light) shell which was designed using fem techniques and Features EPS internal ducts to create a small, light helmet Which is both comfortable and extremely safe. The result is a helmet that is significantly superior to the limits set by ECE Standards and that weighs just 1350g* (+/- 50 g) in MS size (the weight refers to the ECE 2205 version) Unlike the Pista GP, the Corsa comes with a system for opening And closing the air vents which makes it a less extreme, more versatile helmet. The entire ventilation system was designed Using computational fluid dynamics studies and wind tunnel tests.

This helmet is highly efficient at removing heat and moisture from the rider’s head. Thanks to its large rear spoiler, the Corsa boasts unparalleled performance as in terms of aerodynamic penetration and high speed stability. Overall, the visor area is 9% bigger meaning a 15° improvement in vision which obviously enhances the active safety factor

The fit of the Corsa was developed using the new “human Engineering” process with which design starts from the surfaces in contact with the wearer’s head. The padding inside the helmet starts with a concave 3D structure that is pre-shaped to match the contours of the rider’s head and any surfaces in contact with the head are stitch-free.

The Lycra® and Shalimar® sanitised internal components are fully adjustable due to the fact that the position and depth of the crown pad can be modified as can the thickness of the cheek pads. The combination of these solutions, which are covered by Three separate patents, make the Corsa fit different shapes of skull as never before.

Extreme standards helmets is the name of the Revolutionary new range of AGV helmets which Includes the Corsa. It is based on the “human engineering” concept and applies to a new design process which starts from the components that are in direct contact with the head and gradually progresses to the outer shell. As a result, the structural shapes imitate the area of contact thus providing greater safety and smaller dimensions

AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Turtle helmet (Mugello 2013)

AGV Corsa Turtle Rossi Helmet

AGV Corsa Turtle Rossi Helmet

MotoGP might be unpredictable, but one thing can always be counted on – Valentino Rossi will bring a custom helmet design to the Mugello MotoGP round, and it is usually worth the wait.

Over the years we have seen designs as iconic as ‘My Face‘, the ‘Icon‘ helmet, and many more, and in 2013, Rossi chose a turtle design as the subject for his Mugello helmet.

This helmet is also known as the “Tartaruga Mugello 2013” helmet or just simply “Tartaruga”. This helmet is a strictly Limited Edition in the COrsa range, but it can also be picked up in the more affordable AGV K3 range.

Designed by Aldo Drudi, the helmet features a giant cartoon turtle sat on the top of the helmet, with its eyes facing forwards.

The turtle was significant for a number of reasons – it was the first racing mascot that Valentino adopted when he was racing minimotos as a child, and he raced with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toy stuck to the back of his helmet. Rossi also has a small turtle tattoo on his hip.

Valentino Rossi Mugello MotoGP 2013

The turtle design had another meaning, and it was intended as a joke to poke fun at the fact that Rossi had not been fast enough that season and that he was struggling to keep up with Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, and Marc Marquez. There is a reference to this on the side of the helmet where four stick figures can be seen running in a group, with the one at the back in yellow (Valentino Rossi) trying to catch up with the other three.

This helmet design is now available in the excellent AGV Corsa range. The Corsa is a premium helmet that sits between the AGV K3 range and the top level Pista GP helmet. Think of the AGV Corsa as a super-sport helmet that takes some of the best race inspired elements from the Pista GP and gives them more flexibility, and the comfort that is required for a road helmet.

Official description of the “Tartaruga Mugello 2013” helmet:
The Corsa is a supersport helmet which combines the performance of the Pista GP with road-going characteristics such as adjustable ventilation and improved comfort without having to forget the performance standards of the GP version.

Fitted with a double-D retention system, the outer shell is made up of SSL layers (Aramid and glass fibers) and is available in four sizes. The design is intended to cut to the minimum any interference with the racing suit and protective hump and to optimize safety even at high speed.

The spoiler has been designed to detach from the helmet in the event of an accident to increase the passive safety of the helmet. The visor component area has been reduced by 71% compared with the GP Tech and this allows the space saved to be used to increase the thickness of the impact absorption material with all the safety benefits that brings. The visor can easily be removed as can the washable inner components. To provide improved comfort, the surfaces in direct contact with the head are seamless and the fit can be optimized with special additional padding to the cheeks and back of the neck. Designed to maximize comfort, ergonomics, safety and aerodynamics.

Made in Italy and protective of the environment: the Corsa is designed and made in Italy by highly qualified craftsmen using the very latest technology. These helmets are manufactured using the best technologies with great effort invested in protecting the environment. Waterjet technology is used to cut the carbon fiber shells, the painting system uses eco-compatible water-based paints and a dust suppression / residue treatment system is in operation throughout the entire factory.

Extreme Standards Helmets is the name of the revolutionary new range of AGV helmets which includes the Corsa. It is based on the “human engineering” concept and applies to a new design process which starts from the components that are in direct contact with the head and gradually progresses to the outer shell. As a result, the structural shapes imitate the area of contact, thus providing greater safety and smaller dimensions.

Features:

  • Shell: SSL (Super Super Light) in composite fiber, Aramid and carbon fiber.
  • Number of shells: 4 shell sizes.
  • Fabric: Breathable Lycra® lining and Shalimar® fabric with sanitizing treatment.
  • Liners: Fully removable and washable inner liners.
  • Ventilation system: IVS (Integrated Ventilation System) with wide ducts hollowed into the shell.
  • Air vents with open / close mechanism.
  • Visor mechanism: XQRS (X-tra Quick Release System) in metal with roto-translation opening. Visor front micro-lock system that reduces the risk of accidental opening in the event of an accident. Quick release system for tool-free removal and replacement of the visor in seconds.
  • Race flat, Class 1 optical standards, non-scratch and anti-fog visor (4 layers) with wide field of vision suitable for tear-off strips.

AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Winter Test 2013 (Limited Edition)

AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Winter Test 2013 (Limited Edition)

AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Winter Test 2013 (Limited Edition)

This is the AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Winter test 2013 helmet.

This Limited Edition is a race replica of the helmet design that Rossi wore during the winter test period upon his return to Yamaha, after a difficult two years at Ducati.

This is a relatively low-key and understated design by Valentino Rossi standards, although the simplicity still makes it striking to look at. The helmet features a yellow number ’46’ placed directly at the front, with a metallic grey and black rear that features the Sun and Moon logos.

The rear of the helmet features a Japanese character representing the word ‘Kendo’. This is a Japanese phrase that is used to convey an intense emotion. It is said that Rossi first encountered the phrase when he met Masao Furusawa, the Executive Officer of Engineering Operations at Yamaha, when he joined Yamaha for the first time in 2004. The symbol seen on this design was designed by Masao Furusawa’s wife.

AGV Corsa Valentino Rossi Winter Test 2013 (Limited Edition)

This Valentino Rossi replica is a little bit different to the usual ones that you see on the street, and you probably won’t see many of them out of the roads as this is being made as a limited edition on the AGV Corsa range.

The AGV Corsa is basically AGV’s street version of their top of the line Pista helmet range. Whilst the Pista is still suitable for road wear, it is primarily a top range race helmet. The Corsa takes many of the features that you will find in the Pista and incorporates them into a versatile road helmet. The Corsa shares the same shell shape, aerodynamics, ventilation and eye port improvements as the GP-Tech helmet – so you know you are getting quality.

The AGV Corsa range sits between the AGV K3 range and the AGV Pista, making it slightly more affordable than the premium AGV range. It is pretty much the replacement model for the AGV GP-Tech.

Official Description of the AGV Corsa Rossi Winter Test helmet:

The Corsa has the performance of the Pista GP and the characteristics of a helmet for road use.
The carbon-fibre/glass-fibre/aramid SSL (Super Super Light) shell was designed using FEM techniques (Finite Elements Analysis) and features EPS internal ducts in the shell to provide a small, light helmet which is both comfortable and extremely safe.
