AGV Pista GP Valentino Rossi Project 46 2.0 Helmet

This is the brand new and updated version of the Pista Valentino Rossi Project 46 helmet. This new version of the AGV Pista GP Project 46 2.0 is the natural successor of the bestselling Pista GP Project 46 and updates the original model with a Matt finish, a shell made from full carbon, and a design that was created for racing.

The Pista GP was first developed during Rossi’s years at Ducati, and it has since evolved into the premier AGV model that is used by many professional racers using AGV helmets.

The actual graphic design on the helmet is identical to the original Pista helmet.

This is about as good a helmet as you can get, but be warned, it is at the expensive end of the scale. The specs for the Pista GP is above and beyond what you would need for everyday road use, and this is a helmet that really comes alive at high speed and on the track. A full carbon fiber helmet specifically designed for racing and the track and developed with AGV Extreme Standards Helmets project and Valentino Rossi, the Pista GP is one of the most innovative helmets ever released by AGV.

AGV Pista GP:

The AGV STANDARDS project, established in 2009 with Valentino Rossi as its leading rider, is ready to get on the track with the first AGV PistaGP helmet. The Pista GP sets new performance standards with its wide field of vision, low weight and compact dimensions, extensive ventilation, exclusive ergonomic design and class-leading aerodynamics.

Development of the Pista GP began by taking measurements of riders’ heads with a digital scanner. These measurements were then used to design the helmet from the “inside out”. It is based on the “Human Engineering” concept and applies to a new design process which starts from the components that are in direct contact with the head and gradually progresses to the outer shell. As a result, the structural shapes imitate the area of contact thus providing greater safety and smaller dimensions. AGV EXTREME STANDARDS HELMETS use FEM (Finite Elements Analysis) to set new standards in safety, comfort and ergonomics. In addition to new levels of safety, the AGV Pista GP sets new standards in environmental protection with the raw materials and new technologies used in production having a focus on low environmental impact.

  • The residual impact force transmitted to the head is reduced by 36% compared to the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The HIC index is 48% below the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The basic visor movement area has been reduced by 71% compared to the GP-Tech helmet. This allows use of the space saved to increase the thickness of the absorption material, benefiting safety.
  • The visor is Class 1 optical standard approved for excellent vision.
  • The field of vision is 15° wider and the overall visor window area has increased by 9% compared to the previous helmet, without compromising its level of protection.
  • The Z-Lift index has been reduced by 44% after wind tunnel tests.
  • The air intakes have almost tripled in size, whereas the entire ventilation system of the PistaGP helmet removes heat and moisture very efficiently. The padding has a 3D concave structure, which is preshaped according to the morphological characteristics of the head, while the surfaces in direct contact with the head are free from stitching for guaranteed comfort.
  • Thanks to its “from the inside out” design, the structural components of the helmet are designed to provide the required performance while minimizing size and weight.
  • The frontal cross section has been reduced by 3% and the lateral cross section by 6% compared with the GP-Tech helmet.
  • The fit of the PistaGP helmet, covered by three patents, provides an extraordinary high level of comfort and adaptability to different shapes, unknown up to now.

AGV Pista GP Valentino Rossi Project 46 Helmet

This is the AGV Pista GP – the new premium range helmet from AGV that is being used by AGV sponsored MotoGP riders. This model was named ‘Project 46’ and it is the same design that Rossi wore when testing out the Pista helmet in 2012.

The AGV Pista was first seen during the MotoGP winter tests in 2012, when Rossi was on the Ducati Desmosedici GP12. The helmet wasn’t in production at that point and it didn’t have an official name – it was simply called ‘Project 46’.

The new design is said to be the most aerodynamic yet from AGV, and the helmet also has the greatest field of vision of all their helmets. The helmet was created in conjunction with feedback from Valentino Rossi, in fact, in many ways the helmet was built for Valentino Rossi in a way that no other previous helmet has – AGV took biometric scans of Rossi’s head and face, to ensure an optimal fit. In fact all AGV racers now have the same biometric scanning to ensure they have custom fits that are optimized for their heads.

Much was written about the new helmet when Rossi first tested it – it looked sleek and aggressive, and had a design that looked like it had come straight from the designers blueprints. It was Matt Black, with ‘Project 46’ printed in yellow down the side. The sides and top of the helmet had various measurements and markings detailing some of the improvements in the helmet design – example: ‘air flow +193%

Talking about the increased field of vision, Valentino Rossi was quoted as stating that it was like “like switching from TV to cinema.“.

This ‘next generation’ helmet is now on the production line and available for purchase. Obviously you won’t get your own biometric scan, but the AGV Pista has all the cutting edge features that professional racers enjoy, including increased air flow and a much greater field of vision (increased by +15° compared to past AGV helmets).

AGV claim that the Pista has an ‘exclusive’ ergonomic design that makes the ‘Project 46’ the most aerodynamic lid in its class, and they have even gone as far to state that the Pista will lift the bar higher for all helmets and establish a new standard.

This is the official launch video for the Pista helmet range from AGV, which shows how the Pista was designed in conjunction with feedback from Valentino Rossi – the video also shows how they scanned Rossi’s head to ensure an optimal ergonomic shape for racers.

Official Description for the AGV Pista:

The Pista GP is the revolutionary new top of the range model. Developed in collaboration with Valentino Rossi and other riders from the World Championship Series, the Pista GP sets new standards in terms of protection and ergonomics and is the benchmark for professional race helmets. The carbon fibre shell and the EPS internal components were optimised using FEM techniques (Finite Elements Analysis) to obtain an extremely high performance helmet in terms of size, light weight and protection. The result is a helmet that is significantly superior than the limits set by ECE standards and that weighs just 1275 g (refers to MS size in the ECE 2205 version).

The entire ventilation system was designed using computational fluid dynamic modelling and wind tunnel tests. This helmet is highly efficient at removing heat and moisture from the rider’s head. Thanks to its large rear spoiler, the Pista GP boasts first class performance in terms of aerodynamic penetration and high speed stability. Overall, the visor aperture is 9% bigger meaning a 15° improvement in vision which obviously enhances the active safety factor.

The fit of the Pista GP was developed using “Human Engineering” whereby the design starts from the surfaces in contact with the wearer’s head. The inside of the helmet starts with a concave 3D structure that is pre-shaped to match the contours of the rider’s head and any surfaces in contact with the head are stitch-free. The Lycra® and Shalimar® sanitized internal components are fully adjustable due to the fact that the position and depth of the crown pad can be modified as can the thickness of the cheek pads. The combination of these solutions, which are covered by three separate patents, make the Pista GP fit the different cranial shapes as never before

This is a stunning looking helmet, but be warned, it is not cheap and you will be paying a premium price for it. It is extremely lightweight and the matt design with minimal graphics make it look like it has literally just come off the production line. Usually retails around $1,000 / £800, but you can find it cheaper.
